Garden Shed Allotments
Finished 13th November 2009

Autumn is a season of change and ‘Garden Shed Allotments’ is an abundant exhibition that celebrates the transition between summer and winter. As leaves blow around the garden and trees sway in the wind, vegetables and fruits are brought home and our gardens change shape and colour in the dappled autumnal light.
Garden sheds and allotments are safe havens and seedbeds of cultivation and creativity. The exhibition explores self-sufficiency and seasonal growth of flowers and vegetables. Materials have been reused in the making of many of the works on show, for example, in the textile work of Emma Gale and Sallie Temple and the vintage pieces in the jewellery by Gemma Nemer.
The work on show includes wonderful vegetation, animal and bird drawings by Jane Kennelly from York and Elizabeth Walker, a recent graduate from Edinburgh College of Art and charming embroidery, mosaics and mixed media work by Dorothy Thelwall and Kim Tillyer.
Sunny and joyous paintings depicting gardens, allotments, flowers and animals by Rosemary Abrahams, Steve Whitehead and Paula Zimmerman bring the exhibition to life with splashes of colour and light. The exhibition also includes ceramics and precious jewellery by Naomi James and Jill Graham. Creative felt work and pottery by Andrea Bailey and Elizabeth Bailey.
The courtyard garden also provides a seedbed for more creative pieces for all to visit and see. There is an interesting variety of smaller sculptural garden pieces, ceramics and metal sculptures. Louise Dwyer says how “wonderful it is to bring together such a variety of talented artists in our autumn exhibition.”

Great Northern Landscape
21st June – 13th September 2009

Matthew and Louise from the Saltbox Gallery and artist Kane Cunningham brought together a collection of work for an exhibition celebrating northern landscape. Kane took JWM Turner as his inpirational starting point for selecting artists that have produced work in response to the northern landscape. Kane explains, “landscape, rural or industrial, can tell many stories; each has a perspective that resonates with cultural and political meaning. This exhibition brings together some of North Yorkshire’s most distinguished painters and artists who respond, like Turner, to a Northern Landscape in all its glory. They offer their own individual perspective on the Great North, through a personal connection to a unique and awe inspiring landscape.”
Artists included in the exhibition: Richard Barnes, John Creighton, Sally Greves-Lord, Steve Whitehead, Kane Cunningham, Peter Hicks, Janet Moodie and Julia Burnes.
