Painting

Red Hen Original by Julia Burns

Painters shown at the Saltbox Gallery include Kane Cunningham, Rachel Antill, Julia Burns, Claire West and Peter Dwork.

Claire West

Claire says she paints because it makes her happy (which is a superb reason!) and she hopes her work has the same joyful affect on others. She has a strong belief in the power of colour therapy in lifting the spirit; she enjoys exploring colour contrasts. In her paintings she uses colours that are believed to not work together, in doing so she hopes to break down the boundaries of what painting can do.

Claire usually works on canvas in acrylic and inks and produces textured work through layers of paint and random dripping inks. As the painting developes Claire discovers happy accidents which have evolved and help to form the finished painting, often dictating where detail will happen. The subjects of her paintings are often taken from Claire’s surroundings, whether they be a veiw from the car window or a simple jug of flowers. She enjoys drawing attention to the things in life that we often pass by.
